Power Spectrum Sensitivity and the Design of Epoch of Reionization Observatories
نویسنده
چکیده
Recent theoretical developments for observing the epoch of reionization (EOR) have concentrated on the power spectrum signature of redshifted 21 cm emission. These studies have demonstrated the great potential of statistical EOR observations; however, the sensitivity calculations for proposed low-frequency radio arrays have been highly approximate. The formalism developed for interferometric measurements of the cosmic microwave background can be extended to three dimensions to naturally incorporate the line-of-sight information inherent in the EOR signal. In this paper we demonstrate how to accurately calculate the EOR power spectrum sensitivity of an array and develop scaling relationships that can be used to guide the design of EOR observatories. The implications for antenna distribution, antenna size, and correlator requirements on the EOR sensitivity are detailed. Subject headinggs: cosmology: observations — radio lines: general

The Sensitivity of First Generation Epoch of Reionization Observatories and Their Potential for Differentiating Theoretical Power Spectra
Statistical observations of the epoch of reionization (EOR) power spectrum provide a rich data set for understanding the transition from the cosmic “dark ages” to the ionized universe we see today. EOR observations have become an active area of experimental cosmology, and three first generation observatories—MWA, PAST, and LOFAR—are currently under development. In this paper we provide the firs...
متن کاملLight-cone effect on the reionization 21-cm power spectrum
Observations of redshifted 21-cm radiation from neutral hydrogen during the epoch of reionization are considered to constitute the most promising tool to probe that epoch. One of the major goals of the first generation of low-frequency radio telescopes is to measure the 3D 21-cm power spectrum. However, the 21-cm signal could evolve substantially along the lineof-sight (LOS) direction of an obs...
متن کاملConstraints on Fundamental Cosmological Parameters with Upcoming Epoch of Reionization Observations
The first generation of epoch of reionization experiments have the potential to characterize the processes and history of reionization for redshifts 6 < z < 12 by observing the power spectrum of the redshifted 21 cm radiation. These power spectrum observations could also contribute to our knowledge of the underlying cosmology, particularly at redshifts before the effects of reionization strongl...
متن کاملConstraints on Primordial Black Holes and Primeval Density Perturbations from the Epoch of Reionization
We investigate the constraint on the abundance of primordial black holes (PBHs) and the spectral index n of primeval density perturbations given by the ionizing photon background at the epoch of reionization. Within the standard inflationary cosmogony, we show that the spectral index n of the power-law power spectrum of primeval density perturbations should be n <1.27. Since the universe is sti...
متن کاملPrimordial non-Gaussianity from the 21 cm power spectrum during the epoch of reionization.
Primordial non-Gaussianity is a crucial test of inflationary cosmology. We consider the impact of non-Gaussianity on the ionization power spectrum from 21 cm emission at the epoch of reionization. We focus on the power spectrum on large scales at redshifts of 7 to 8 and explore the expected constraint on the local non-Gaussianity parameter f(NL) for current and next-generation 21 cm experiments...
